International Summer School
Our intensive International
Summer School offers a unique opportunity to study in London using the rich and
social diversity the city has to offer.
This two week programme is designed to give international students aged 16-18 who have completed year one of I.B (or equivalent), an introduction to University level study in art and design.
The programme is structured in a similar way to a foundation course, and helps students build their portfolios, whilst allowing them to develop the necessary knowledge and practical skills for the final year of their I.B (or equivalent) study. In addition, we welcome students from other English medium schools with equivalent art and design experience.
Throughout the course informal discussions and critiques with a broad cross-section of University staff will enable students to gain greater insight and confidence in the preparation of their portfolios for University entry.
Course dates: Monday 12th July – Friday 23rd July 2010
Arrival: Sunday 11th July
Departure: Saturday 24th July
Total course fee: £1500
Minimum age: 16 years
Spaces are limited so early booking is advisable. Download the Booking Form now.
Accommodation
Students will be accommodated at the Passfield Hall
of Residence, located near Euston Square, in twin or triple rooms. Breakfast
will be provided everyday, and lunch will be provided Monday to Friday. Return
airport transfer from/to Heathrow is included
in the course fee.
Course Content
Drawing and Research is an important part of the course and practice will take place both in the studio and in various locations around London, including galleries, museums, theatres, streets and markets, as well as the six Colleges of the University.
From these sketchbook/journal studies, students will be expected to further develop their observational and on-site work into a series of mixed media pieces, resulting in a number of outcomes. This will allow students to build on their own particular skills whilst demonstrating an awareness of contemporary, historical and cultural art and design contexts.
Week One will be based at Wimbledon College of Art. During this first stage of the programme the students will be encouraged to respond to the theme by immersing themselves in the vitality of the city and its many aspects, and recording these responses in a variety of ways.
Week Two will be spent sampling one day workshop projects at each of the other five Colleges: Camberwell, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea, London College of Communication, and London College of Fashion. These one-day workshops, hosted by the Colleges, offer an opportunity for the students to both realise ideas through various specialist processes and materials, and at the same time gain first-hand experience of the inspiring and unique atmosphere of the University Colleges.
Optional weekend activities will be organised,
including visits to cultural sites of London, galleries, relevant exhibitions
and markets.
